#525: Chefs & Tats

Here is a photo of Chef Gerard Craft from this year’s Worlds of Flavor Conference at the CIA…

Notice the tats.

Chefs and tattoos. It’s kind of a thing, no?  I watched a recent episode of Top Chef wherein one contestant remarked that all the chefs ‘on the bubble’ (close to elimination) curiously had zero tattoos. Is it just me, or is there a trend of chefs with tattoos. Particularly sleeves. Maybe since they have to wear chef whites all day, every day they get tattoos as a way to express their individual style. You might say it’s because they’re located in coastal urban areas like New York or LA…and everybody in those towns sport tattoos. But, Gerard here lives in St. Louis.

Did you hear about this guy and his book? Maybe someone should do a book on Chefs and their Tattoos. Although I can’t say I’ve seen a lot of them with images of foie gras or pork belly permanently inked on their bodies.  Sadly.  I did meet someone recently–not a chef, but a food professional nonetheless–with an a diagram showing the various cuts of beef on his arm.  Course, he worked at The Fatted Calf.

Personally, I’ve always been a fan of the sleeves. Chef or no. What do you think?
