Eis und Leder

Not to be confused with my previous post, Eins, this one is titled Eis. Eins means one, Eis means something entirely different: ice cream. Just off the ever-touristy Marktplatz near our apartment is one of Heidelberg’s many ice cream parlors. The Germans are fond of ice cream. Visit in the middle of summer and you’ll find the streets swarming with people feating on ice cream. Ice cream in cones. Ice cream in ceremic dishes. Heaping, gleaming, complicated ice cream sundaes. Ice cream in the post office, ice cream in the supermarket. It’s like the ubiquitous bagette in France. (Aside: I recently saw what I believe falls into the category of “strangest place to see a French person with a bagette:” a woman coming out of a bathroom stall at a rest stop off the A36 in (where else?) France.)

Our german language classes are now officially underway. We started Monday at 8:00 AM for 1.5 hours and we’ll continue that way, 4 days a week, for 23 eyelid-heavy weeks. We’re studying through Berlitz, whose method progresses at quite a quick pace. And though 23 weeks, 4 days a week seems daunting the end result will be well worth it. According to Berlitz, we should be able to “refashion and combine learned material to meet immediate communication and learning needs, comprehend information on familiar topics in contextualized settings, and produce sustained conversation with others on an expanding variety of general topics.” -Berlitz.com. So. We will be great. In 23 weeks.

eins

We have been in Heidelberg for three months now. And with daily life so full of rich, new experiences, it feels like much longer.Plenty of time passed with very little writing or reflecting on my part. Only now, have I started. And I think it is because, in the beginning, I felt there was always something “more important” to do. So I was either extremely productive or justifying procrastination. It simply wasn’t time yet.
